Welcome to Week 7 of the 52 weeks to a better you journey.
This has been an exciting 6 weeks.
Alright, maybe exciting isn’t the right word. After all, we just did six baby steps. We are hardly climbing Mt. Everest.
Or are we?
Everything begins with the first step, doesn’t it? They seem small, these baby steps. They may seem insignificant, but they are not. In fact, I will bet that you will be better able to accomplish your big goals (getting healthy, losing weight, less stress, whatever it is…) if you keep making baby steps than if you tried to jump into the deep end of the pool.
Wow. Did that sound like preaching? Oh, I hope not. I don’t mean to be preachy at all. I really want to encourage you. 🙂
That is where my excitement is coming in. I am encouraged by the simple fact that we are taking these baby steps. It is better than doing nothing.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, but what is the baby step for week 7?
I am so glad you asked that!
First things first. If you are just joining in on our 52 Weeks to a Better You Journey, you can start at Week 1 here.
Spend 15 minutes every day calming your spirit
We have been taking baby steps for making our body better, making our finances better, and making our relationships better. This week we are going to add making our soul better.
What does that look like for you?
For me, that will be focusing on my relationship with God. Spending time in His word (the Bible) and praying. Maybe that will be meditation for you. Perhaps yoga stretches are what it takes to calm your spirit. Do you like to chant an encouraging mantra?
No matter what you believe, we all have a spirit (or soul) that needs to be taken care of. It is what makes us different from animals that live on instinct. It is what makes us sympathetic as well as empathetic to others. We have feelings. We share feelings. We feel others pains and excitements.
Because there is so much noise in our world, we need to take some time to block out the noise and focus on those things which will make us better people.
Baby step for this week: Spend 15 minutes every day calming your spirit. If you already do this and you feel your spirit is ready to take on the world, give yourself a high five, keep doing it and come back next week. If you spend some time on your spirit, but still feel out of balance, add some time to what you are doing.
If you have not focused on your spirit at all, here are a few tips for doing it:
- Unplug. The TV, the phone, the computer… anything that will be a distraction to you
- Listen to soft music
- Listen to soft sounds of nature
- Put headphones on and close your eyes
- Take deep breaths in through your nose, out through your mouth
- Count slowly backwards from twenty
What about you?
What do you do to calm your spirit?
