I know that every person is different. That is what is so great about the human race. We are the same yet different. Our personalities and experiences make for interesting ways to celebrate life.
I love opportunities to celebrate life. To make and keep traditions. To shower my friends and family with love (and presents). To make lots of memories.
We are in the holiday season which is an opportunity that I look forward to the entire year. I want to share with you some of the traditions that our family has that we look forward to participating in every year.
This is one of our big traditions. If you look at pictures of our tree from year to year it tends to look the same, but when you get close to it, you see the differences in the many ornaments that are on the tree. Every year we add new ones. My favorite part about the tree is sitting in the dark with only the tree lights blinking while enjoying quiet time with my husband.
Speaking of ornaments, our family has the tradition of picking out a new ornament every year. Every family member picks out their own for the year. Sometimes that ornament represents something that has happened that year or something that we particularly like at that time. Sometimes we just find one that speaks to us.
One day, usually sometime during the first week of December, the family gathers together to decorate. We play Christmas music, have some hot drinks available, and enjoy the memories that come while we put up our decorations. I love to tell and listen to the stories about all of the different ornaments.
I’m not a big fan of holiday shopping. Unfortunately, the closer we get to Christmas, the worse shopping tends to be. People are stressed and that manifests itself in quite a bit of rudeness. So I try to avoid any shopping close to Christmas. However, I love to find just the right present for people on my list, so I schedule a full day during the work week in early November. My daughters and I do some stress free shopping and just enjoy the day hanging out with each other. This is a tradition that my mom passed down to me.
The food! Oh, one of the things I look forward to during the holidays are all of those foods that we don’t have much during the year. My mother-in-law makes awesome cheese balls. When my mom was alive, she made the best homemade cookies. Ham, turkey, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole… Yum! I’m getting hungry just thinking about it. 🙂 One of the most asked for food in my family is the Crispy Log. Stay tuned because I will post that recipe on this blog soon.
